Healthy Halloween

“Just a few more days and we get candy!” At least that is what the children are saying (maybe some adults too). On the other hand, you may be thinking “Just a couple more days and my children will be hyper until next year (depending on how fast they decide to eat their candy).”

This can be a fun time for everyone. The best thing to do is to teach your children about moderation and making healthy choices.

Sugary drinks/foods/candy spike blood glucose levels which then cause a rapid drop in blood glucose causing one to feel irritability, hunger and experience stress on the body. The pancreas, the organ responsible for secreting the hormones to regulate blood sugar, is forced to work harder to maintain a normal blood sugar level.

Over time, if this is done to the body repeatedly, it wears out the pancreas and that is one way people can end up with diabetes later in life.

Sugar is also known to decrease the immune system’s function for two hours after ingestion. This means that if you or your child are exposed to an illness during that time, the body is not as effective in defending itself. This can predispose a person to getting sick.

So how can you enjoy this time and stay healthy?

Here are some tips to having a healthy Halloween:
1. Eat a healthy snack/dinner before enjoying one or two pieces of candy.
2. Drink plenty of water
3. Get a good nights sleep
4. If you don’t want to keep all the candy, there are dentists that participate in the Halloween Candy Buy Back. Children trade in their candy for cash and prizes. Here are two dentists near Mountlake Terrace who are participating .
